Halloween - Autumn Festival
2500 years ago the Samain, ancester of Halloween
and All Saints day...
The Samain holiday used to last 3 days, but the celebrations could go on for 15 days :
Day 1 : the first day was devoted to the memory of the deceased great men. Day 2 : this day was the holiday of all the deads. Day 3: the last day was the one for celebrations and party.
In the XI century the Samain was forbidden as were most pagan holidays. The church established the All Saints day
(Toussaint ) which date is the first day of the Samain holiday, and the holiday of the dead is the second day of the Samain holiday.
The night of the Samain, a Gaul holidayJack-o'-lantern Halloween
The Samain is a Celtic holiday and therefore Gaul (because the Gauls were one of the Celtics nations) ; this holiday is from the night of October 31 until November 1st of our julien calendar . This day was the last day of summer and the beginning of the dark season. The Samain was the beginning of the new year, its celebration was mandatory. This holiday lasted from 3 to 15 days.
The Samain was the day when the God of death told the dead of this year their new destination or “reincarnation”. The holiday had a cultural and religious dimension. According to the tradition this night belonged to the deads who were disguised as monsters and came back to visit the livings. This explain the origin of the costume for this holiday
